About the Video Trimmer

The Video Trimmer is not finished yet, so read this page as a description of what is coming. The idea is a short path: load an MP4, WebM or MOV, mark where the clip should start and stop, and get back exactly that stretch — full quality, nothing branded onto it, no account asked for. Your file will go to Zyff's servers to be cut, and will live there only as long as that one request takes.

How to trim a video online

  1. Upload your video

    Drop in an MP4, WebM or MOV file. The clip uploads to Zyff's servers, where it is processed in memory and never stored after your trimmed file is returned.

  2. Set the in and out points

    Scrub the timeline to mark where the clip should start and end, or type exact timecodes when you need the cut to land on a specific word or beat.

  3. Choose lossless or re-encode

    Keep the original streams for a fast, quality-preserving cut, or re-encode when playback has to begin exactly on the frame you picked.

  4. Download the trimmed clip

    Preview the result and save it. Nothing is stamped onto the video, and no account is needed to download the file at full quality.

What the Video Trimmer does

Lossless cuts where possible

Cuts that fall on a keyframe can copy the existing video and audio streams instead of re-encoding them, so quality is untouched and the trim finishes quickly.

Frame-accurate re-encoding

When your in point sits between keyframes, the clip can be re-encoded so playback starts exactly where you marked instead of snapping back to an earlier frame.

MP4, WebM and MOV

Planned support covers the files people actually have: MP4 and MOV carrying H.264 or HEVC, and WebM carrying VP8, VP9 or AV1 from screen recorders and browsers.

Audio stays in sync

The audio track will be trimmed to the same range as the picture and stay aligned, with the option to drop it entirely if you want a silent clip.

Exact timecode entry

Type start and end times instead of dragging a handle, which matters when you are cutting to a script, a beat, or a range someone sent you.

No watermark, no signup

The trimmed file will download clean and free. There will be no account to create and no export limit to hit, and your upload will never be stored on Zyff's servers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lossless and re-encoded video trimming?

Lossless trimming copies the compressed video and audio streams into a new file without decoding them, so there is no added quality loss and the cut is fast. Re-encoding decodes the video and compresses it again, which allows a cut at any moment but costs a little quality and more time. Lossless cuts are limited to keyframe boundaries, which is why both options exist.

Why does my trimmed video start earlier than the point I chose?

Because a lossless cut can only begin on a keyframe. Codecs like H.264 and VP9 store most frames as differences from an earlier keyframe, so a file cut mid-sequence has nothing to decode from and the start snaps back to the previous keyframe. Re-encoding the selection fixes it by rebuilding frames from your exact in point.

Which video formats and codecs will the trimmer support?

The plan is MP4 and MOV containers carrying H.264 or HEVC, plus WebM carrying VP8, VP9 or AV1 — what phones, cameras and screen recorders produce. Container and codec are separate things: MP4 is the wrapper, H.264 is the compression inside it. MP4 with H.264 stays the safest output for sharing because it plays almost everywhere.

Does trimming a video reduce its quality?

A lossless trim does not, because the already-compressed frames are copied unchanged into a new container. A re-encoded trim loses a small amount, since the video is decompressed and compressed again. At a sensible bitrate that is hard to see on one pass, but re-encoding the same clip over and over compounds the damage.

How is trimming a video different from cropping it?

Trimming changes the duration by removing time from the start or end of a clip. Cropping changes the frame, cutting pixels off the edges to alter the aspect ratio or composition. Searches for "crop video length" almost always mean trimming; changing the shape of the picture is a separate operation.

Can I trim a video on my phone?

Not today, but yes once it ships. The page is built to work from a 320px-wide screen upward, so you will be able to pick a recording from your camera roll, set the in and out points, and download the result without a desktop. On mobile the upload is the slow part, so a long 4K recording spends most of its time transferring rather than cutting.

Will the trimmer remove the audio from my clip?

No — the plan is to keep the audio and cut it to match the video so the two stay in sync. If you want silence — for a background loop or a social post that autoplays muted — dropping the audio stream on export will be an option. Trimming audio out is a choice, never the default.

Is the Zyff Video Trimmer available yet?

Not yet. It is in active build and this page is live so the tool is easy to find the day it ships. When it launches, trimming will happen on Zyff's servers with uploads processed in memory and never stored, and the exported clip will carry no watermark and require no account.
