About the Video to GIF

Video to GIF is still on the build list rather than something you can run today. Once it lands, making a loop comes down to four decisions — which clip, which seconds of it, how many frames per second, and how wide — and the output is an optimized animated GIF with nothing stamped on it. The encode will happen on Zyff's hardware instead of your phone's, and the clip you send will be discarded the moment the GIF comes back.

How to convert a video to a GIF

  1. Upload your video clip

    Drop in an MP4, MOV or WebM file. It uploads to Zyff's servers, where it is processed in memory and never stored once your GIF has been returned.

  2. Pick the seconds to loop

    Set a start and end time. Duration drives GIF size more than any other setting, because every frame is stored as a separate image inside the file.

  3. Set frame rate and width

    Choose frames per second and an output width. Dropping a 30fps source to 12-15fps and narrowing the width is the fastest way to cut megabytes.

  4. Download your GIF

    Check the loop and the resulting file size, then save it. No watermark is added and no signup is required, so the GIF is ready to post or attach.

Palette built from your clip

GIF allows 256 colours per frame, so the palette will be generated from your actual footage rather than a generic table, which limits banding in gradients and skin tones.

Frame rate control

A lower frame rate means fewer stored images and a much smaller file. Setting fps yourself lets you trade smoothness for size deliberately instead of guessing.

Trim before converting

Select the exact range you want to loop rather than converting a whole recording. Two seconds off the end of a clip can remove a large share of the file size.

Resize on export

Set an output width and the height follows the source aspect ratio, so a 1080p screen recording becomes a light 480px loop without distortion or letterboxing.

GIF carries no audio

The format has no audio track, so sound is dropped on conversion. That is stated up front because it surprises people converting a clip where the audio mattered.

No ffmpeg, no desktop app

Converting a clip usually means installing ffmpeg and remembering a palettegen filter chain, or paying for an app that does it once. Here it will be an upload and four settings, with the encoder work staying on Zyff's side.

How do I convert a video to a GIF?

Choose the seconds you want to loop, set a frame rate, set an output width, then export. Those three settings decide almost all of the resulting file size, because a GIF stores every frame as its own image. On Zyff this will be a single upload-and-download step once the converter ships.

Why are GIF files so large compared to video?

A GIF stores each frame as a separate losslessly compressed image and has no motion compensation, so it cannot cheaply describe an object moving across the screen. Video codecs like H.264, VP9 and AV1 encode only what changed between frames, which is why the same clip is dramatically smaller as an MP4 or WebM. Length, frame rate and width are the three levers that actually shrink a GIF.

How many colors can a GIF have?

256 per frame, taken from a palette stored inside the file. Footage with gradients, film grain or slow fades can show banding or dithering noise once it is reduced to 256 colors, and that is the most visible cost of the format. Deriving the palette from your specific clip keeps the damage as small as possible.

What frame rate should I use for a GIF?

10 to 15fps is smooth enough for most screen recordings, reaction clips and product demos while storing roughly half the frames of a 30fps source. Use 20-24fps only when motion is fast enough that stutter would be obvious. After duration, frame rate is the cheapest way to cut size.

Should I use a GIF or an MP4 instead?

Use GIF when the destination only accepts an image or has to autoplay and loop without a player: chat apps, some email clients, documentation and code-hosting README files. Use MP4 or WebM anywhere a video player exists, since the same clip will be far smaller, keep full color and can carry sound. Several large platforms quietly convert uploaded GIFs to video for that reason.

Can a GIF have a transparent background?

Yes, but only one fully transparent color — GIF has a single bit of alpha per pixel, so there is no soft or semi-transparent edge. That makes GIF transparency look jagged around anti-aliased edges and impossible around a drop shadow. Ordinary video has no alpha channel anyway, so a GIF made from a normal clip will have a solid background.

Does converting video to GIF lose quality?

Yes, in three specific ways: color is reduced to 256 values per frame, frames are usually dropped to keep the size manageable, and audio is discarded because the format has no audio track. The pixels themselves are compressed losslessly, so you will not see blocky video artifacts — the palette reduction is the visible tradeoff.
