Zyff's age verification widget asks visitors to confirm their age before they browse, free. Choose a yes/no question, a full date of birth, a year of birth, or a plain notice with a single button, and the answer is remembered so it does not ask again on every page. Be clear about what this is: a self-declaration gate. It records that someone said they were old enough — it checks nothing against any record, and the page behind it is already loaded. That is true of every age gate of this kind, and Zyff says so rather than letting you believe otherwise. The output is one div and one script tag that works in WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow or a hand-written HTML page alike.

## How to add an age verification popup to your website

1. **Choose how it asks** — A yes/no question loses fewest visitors, a date of birth feels most deliberate, a year of birth sits between them, and a plain notice asks nothing at all.
2. **Write the wording** — The heading, the message, the buttons and any small print — a link to your terms, or a responsible-drinking notice.
3. **Set what happens if they are too young** — Show a message, or send them somewhere else. Neither locks anything: the gate is a notice, not access control.

No, and no widget of this kind does. It records that a visitor said they were old enough. Nothing is checked against any record, anyone can answer it however they like, and the page behind it is already loaded in the browser. It is a notice and a record of intent, not access control.

**Is an age gate enough to comply with the law?**

That depends entirely on where you are and what you sell, and it is a question for someone who knows your jurisdiction. In many places a self-declaration gate is the accepted norm for alcohol and similar categories. Where real age assurance is required — increasingly the case for some categories in the UK and EU — that means a server-side identity check with a verification provider, not a widget. Zyff cannot be that, and does not claim to be.

**Can someone just click through it?**

Yes. Anyone can answer the question untruthfully, and a determined visitor can bypass it entirely because the content was never withheld from the browser. That is inherent to the format, not a shortcoming of this implementation.

**Which layout should I use?**

Yes or no, for almost everyone. It loses fewest visitors, and since none of the options verify anything, a date of birth mostly buys the appearance of rigour at the cost of people giving up. Use the date of birth only if your industry's code of practice expects it.

**Will it ask on every page?**

Not unless you choose that. By default the answer is remembered for a number of days in the visitor's own browser, and you can set it to remember for the session instead. Asking every time is available but rarely a good idea.

**What happens to someone under age?**

They see the message you write, or you can redirect them to a URL. Neither prevents them returning and answering differently — see the question above about what this widget can and cannot do.

**Does it hurt my SEO?**

It can. A gate that covers the page on the first visit is seen by crawlers too, and content behind an interstitial is treated less favourably. Since the gate does not remove the content from the HTML, search engines can still read the page — but do not expect an interstitial to be free.

**Is the age verification widget really free?**

Yes. Building it, styling it and embedding it are free with no signup, no trial and no watermark — a free embed carries a small \"Age gate by Zyff\" link, which is how the tool stays free. The yes/no and notice layouts are free, and so is remembering the answer: a gate that re-asked constantly would be the version visitors abandon. A paid plan adds the date-of-birth and year layouts, full colour control and removes the attribution link.
